Were you informed that you might need to have your teeth scaled and your roots planed, also known as a deep cleaning, but you don’t know what that even means? You aren’t alone. We would like to briefly describe why this procedure is performed and what you can expect afterwards. If you frequently get a form of gum disease known as periodontitis, our dentists may recommend this non-surgical procedure to help treat it.
Why is it be done?
Scaling and root planing teeth, also known as deep cleaning, is done to remove all the bacterial toxins, plaque and tartar deposits from your root and teeth surfaces. It also smooths out these surfaces so that plaque and other substances can’t adhere as easily.
Afterwards
At your checkup, Drs. Haas, Burns or Haas will want to see how your gums are healing and ensure that there are no pockets of infection remaining. Following the procedure, your gums could return to their firm and pink states once more and may not require further treatment.
Prevention
Gum disease can be tricky and could catch you by surprise. The American Dental Association, or ADA, has recommend getting a checkup with the dentist every six months to help prevent periodontal disease and other problems. Maintaining a healthy dental routine at home may also play a pivotal role in preventing gum disease from invading your smile.
Such a routine can include:
-Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once daily
-Replacing your toothbrush every three to four months
-Using an antimicrobial mouthwash
